Pediatric Trauma Course for 911 Telecommunicators
Trauma is among the leading causes of injury and death in American children. As a time-sensitive condition, it is essential that EMS resources be deployed as quickly as possible to minimize response and scene times en route to definitive care.
911 telecommunicators play a critical role in the prehospital management of injured children. This course is designed to review the ways in which 911 telecommunicators can reduce EMS response time and help their pediatric trauma patients through the following topics:
- Defining the impact of pediatric trauma – the size and cost of the problem, who is most affected and who is at the greatest risk, what can be done to prevent it
- Collecting important information that can be obtained from the 911 call that influences which resources are dispatched
- Recognizing severe injury early
- Examining ways in which 911 telecommunicators can assist EMS on the scene
- Identifying and notifying the appropriate level of definitive care
